This is one of the most effective ways of spreading the word about Apartheid.
To the Editor (or your US Congress Representative and Senators):
I write to call attention to the ongoing and escalating humanitarian disaster affecting Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza.Former President and 2002 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Jimmy Carter, and South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate in 1984, have called the situation imposed by the Israeli government apartheid.Apartheid was the rigid form of segregation and oppression that was imposed on the Black African majority in South Africa before crumbling in the early 1990s.Today, Israel brutally separates Palestinians from their livelihoods, families, schools and health care facilities by separation walls, militarized checkpoints, separate (and inferior) roadways, identity cards, and a pervasive military presence. While the situation for Palestinians is everywhere oppressive, it has been called catastrophic—an impending humanitarian disaster—by the head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) because of Israeli blockades of food, fuel and medicine.
Americans are understandably concerned about our domestic economic crisis and its impact on their daily lives and economic security. But we should also be aware that Israel receives more foreign aid from the US government than any other country. In other words, as Americans, we are complicit in Israel’s apartheid policies. Now is the time for our government to change course and work for a justice in the Middle East.
